Colorectal Cancer Disease Prevention and Hereditary Issues
It is estimated that approximately 20% of individuals affected with gastrointestinal cancers have a family history of the disease and some of these cases are due to hereditary syndromes linked with gastrointestinal cancers and/or colorectal polyps. Dr. Kastrinos is director of the Familial Colon Cancer Clinic at Columbia University Medical Center. This program accepts patients with personal and/or family histories of any gastrointestinal cancer or intestinal polyps including: colon cancer and gastric cancer. Genetic counseling is available by appointment to further assess risk of hereditary causes of gastrointestinal cancers and polyps and genetic testing options. This program will also provide eligible patients the option of participating in clinical research studies and the Gastrointestinal Cancer Genetics Registry.
