Fellowship in Nutrition for Physician

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in our fellowship program in Clinical Nutrition Support. We are currently accepting applications for the July 2025 position. The program is a one-year clinical fellowship on the Adult Nutrition Support Service, with subsequent research year(s) possible based on performance and interest. Research opportunities in the first year depend on the motivation of the fellow.

Columbia University Medical Center is one of the premier academic medical centers in the United States. You will find yourself in a place of innovation and excellent care. The fellow spends the majority of their time caring for the sickest and most complex hospitalized patients. He or she will gain knowledge not only in the provision of enteral and parenteral nutrition support, but in the medical, perioperative, critical care, and ethical issues that occur in these patients. The fellow must be bright and knowledgeable, and willing to work hard. We have a very busy service.

The goals of the fellowship are for the trainee to become competent in the following for acutely and chronically ill patients with nutritional risk:

1- Assess nutritional state and risk for complications.
2- Develop, implement, monitor and adjust the appropriate nutrition support modality
3- Diagnose and manage complications related to nutrition support therapy

The fellow works under the direct supervision of David S. Seres, MD, ScM, PNS, Director of Medical Nutrition, Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Seres has been a physician nutrition specialist since 1990. Full Bio

Patients seen by the fellow are all adults admitted to CUMC/New York Presbyterian Hospital. Patients are referred to the service from multiple other services including critical care, surgery, oncology, GI and others. The referring physicians will discuss the case in detail with the fellow, offering valuable teaching support. Further opportunities exist to rotate with the senior registered dietitians, and with other specialty areas such as obesity, body composition, endocrinology (bone, dyslipidemia), nephrology, critical care, and gastroenterology. Conferences in all specialties are available.

Ample opportunity exists within the department to pursue clinical research projects. Trainees are actively encouraged to attend and contribute to national meetings especially the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) annual meeting.

To be considered for the fellowship, the applicant must have completed a specialty residency (internal medicine, family medicine, or three years of surgery) and be Board eligible or certified. Potential interviewees are selected for based on submitted documentation, including curriculum vitae, school transcripts, board scores, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. The trainee is selected based on the interview, the submitted materials and their prior and/or future commitment to nutrition practice and research in their career.

Because this is not an ACGME certified fellowship, to be considered for the fellowship applicants must also:
    • Have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency/green card/existing J1 with at least 1 year remaining
    • Be eligible for a New York State medical license, which must be obtained in advance of start date
    • Be USMLE certified (plus ECFMG if appropriate)
    • Have completed an approved residency (or the first 3 years of surgical residency) and be eligible or board certified by the appropriate board

If you are interested, please submit the following:
    • Personal statement outlining why you are interested in clinical nutrition, how you see using the training you receive,
what skills you would like to gain, and what makes you an exceptional candidate
    • Current curriculum vitae
    • Three letters of recommendations, including one from the Program Director of your most recent training program.
    • USMLE scores
    • Citizenship/Visa status

Please forward your application materials to the address below (email or US mail), and do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

Wishing you the best in all your future endeavors,
