Message from Donald W. Landry, MD, PhD, Chair
On behalf of the Faculty and Staff of the Department of Medicine, I am pleased to welcome you to our Internal Medicine Residency Program.
Over the past century, the accomplishments of alumni of our residency program have distinguished the Department of Medicine of Columbia University and the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Drawing upon this rich tradition of house staff education, we strive to train the future leaders of American medicine. We have a diverse, talented faculty, eager to provide patient care and education both on the Wards, in our two attending system, and by way of research opportunities in our clinics and laboratories. Our program's strength is predicated on graduated patient-care responsibility, unwavering commitment to the care of the underserved, state-of-the-art medicinal practices, and devotion to the rigorous training of our medical students and residents.
Our training environment has become all the more robust for the many forces that have reshaped hospitals and training programs across the nation. New York Presbyterian Hospital has emerged as one of the nation’s leading hospitals and the premier hospital in the New York Metropolitan area. The Department of Medicine is the largest Department of the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, and is thus the cornerstone of one of the nation's largest and richest academic medical centers. We have structured our program to ensure the best possible working conditions for our residents, while assuring the breadth and depth of experience necessary to build confidence in caring for the most challenging patients. The population of Northern Manhattan, including a vibrant Spanish speaking community, has increasingly looked to us for their medical care. Approximately half of the inpatients at the Columbia University Medical Center are served by the Department of Medicine and 80% of those are admitted through the Emergency Department. We have a growing inpatient census at the Milstein Hospital and Allen Pavilion and an expanding resident outpatient practice in our Internal Medicine and subspecialty clinics.
This is an exciting time in the Department of Medicine at Columbia. I am joined in directing the department by Dr. Katherine Nickerson, the Vice Chair for Education and Operations and Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, the Director of the Medical House Staff Program. In addition, Dr. Ira Tabas, the Vice Chair for Research, provides mentoring for the research components of the residency program, and Dr. Allan Schwartz, the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, provides mentoring for clinical development. We are committed to nurturing the career development of our residents and facilitating opportunities to pursue additional advanced clinical and research training.
In this era of vast changes in the field of medicine, one constant remains: our sustained focus on the excellence of your training and our commitment to the realization of your full potential as physicians. We welcome your inquiries and your application.
