Message from the Director—Joseph Tenenbaum, MD

picture of Dr. Nicholas FiebachIt is a great pleasure to introduce you to our Medical House Staff Training Program (MHSP) in Internal Medicine. The Department of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center(CUMC) offers outstanding opportunities for graduating medical students to further their educational and professional goals by obtaining premier training in a state-of-the-art academic medical center. CUMC formerly known as the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, is now part of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the two campuses of which comprise the largest teaching hospital in this country, and which is consistently ranked among the 10 best. The Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and the Medical Center have long been recognized as national and world leaders in clinical care, research, and education, and continue to develop innovative solutions to many of the challenges facing the medical community. The residency training program in Internal Medicine is at the heart of this dynamic process and offers unique opportunities for individuals with a wide variety of interests.

Whether your interests lie towards subspecialty medicine or primary care, basic research or clinical investigation, you will find well-developed pathways in the MHSP to help you further your professional training. Recognizing that many medical school graduates interested in internal medicine have not yet settled on a career choice, our program provides a system of career counseling, frequent workshops, and, above all else, an intensive clinical training experience to help give you the experiences necessary to make the right choices.

Our residency training program provides rigorous, hands-on experience to fully establish yourself as you begin your medical career. The faculty of the Department of Medicine has a tradition of involvement in house staff education and considers the residency training program as the center of its activities. The clinical training you will receive, the friendships and mentoring that will develop, and the bonds that will form between you and your patients will complete the transition from "student" to "physician" that you have already begun. Although we remain students throughout our professional lives, it is unmistakable that something very special occurs during residency training.

You will find a diverse array of clinical and scientific opportunities at Columbia. As an integral part of a premier center for patient care, education, and research, the training program in Internal Medicine will work with you to clarify your goals, establish your clinical skills, and meet your career objectives. We appreciate your interest in our program, and we look forward to providing you with further details about House Staff training in Internal Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center.
