| Research in the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine at the College
of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University
has had a long and distinguished record of
contributions to research. Over the past five
decades, it has counted among its members a
total of six individuals who were either awarded
a Nobel Prize during their tenure on the faculty
or who were so recognized at a later stage
in their career. In 1996-97 (the most recent
period for which figures are available), Columbia
University and its affiliates ranked seventh
nationally among U.S. medical schools in total
federal research grants and contracts. The
Department of Medicine alone has attracted
well over $120 million in research monies annually
(direct costs) for the past five years. Current
research endeavors in the Department of Medicine,
both "basic" and "clinical", are wide-ranging
and rapidly expanding.
