What is MOHD?
The Multi-Omics for Health and Disease Consortium (MOHD) is a research initiative established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to advance the generation and analysis of multi-omics data for human health research. As one of the six disease study sites (DSS) of MOHD, Columbia University led by Dr. Krzysztof Kiryluk will establish a chronic kidney disease (CKD) DSS to evaluate if multi-omic approaches can improve precision medicine and promote CKD care.
Goals of MOHD at Columbia:
- Leverage multi-omics approaches, integrated with phenotypic and environmental exposure data, to identify and characterize molecular profiles of chronic kidney disease (CKD), thereby advancing precision medicine efforts.
What is being looked at from the sample you provide?
In addition to using your samples for routine tests, doctors and scientists will use your samples for Multi-omics testing:
- Metabolome: All of the substances inside and outside of your cells that say what your cells in your body are doing.
- Genome: Entire genetic code that makes you who you are and is stored in your cells.
- Exposome: All of the substances you are exposed to in your day to day life.
- Transcriptome: Small parts of the genome that are copied and act as instructions to make up the working parts of your body.
- Microbiome: All of the microbes that naturally live on and in our bodies.
- Proteome: The working parts of your cells that act as the machinery and building blocks of your cells.

What do I do once I've enrolled?
- Collecting medical information along with blood, urine, nasal swabs and stool samples in a longitudinal fashion.
- One visit a year for 3 years.
- We will compensate you for your contribution.
What happens to my samples?
The samples will go to the MOHD research sites where scientists will study them. Any extra tissue will be stored in a central location, to be shared only with other researchers. Important genomic results that could affect your treatment will be returned to you.
How does MOHD protect my data?
MOHD takes data security and privacy very seriously. We take many steps to keep your medical data safe at every stage of the study. Your personal information will never be shared. Only approved research teams can see your data and samples. Data that is shared will be anonymized.
